I’m constantly being evaluated by my students.
It could seem threatening but it keeps me improving. I’m also constantly evaluating the Youth Ministry Institute that I co-lead with Tyson Howells. We’re regularly looking for new ways to make our program better.
Sometimes we evaluate student ministries to help them be the best that they can be. Here are 2 consulting tools that I like to use with groups. I hope you find them helpful.
The Youth Group Survey
The first one is based on 6 Key Characteristics that need to be a full strength if you run a church group or an outreach club. I won’t go into all of them here because I described them in detail in a previous blog that you can read. (see The Six Key Conditions for Health and Growth )

If you have a very small group skip the data on the top of the sheet so the students can be anonymous. Have the students fill this out on a youth night then tabulate the results. Share the results with you adult leaders and get input on areas for growth. You may want to start developing strategies to improve certain areas.
Consider sharing the results with the youth. If you tell them in advance that you are going to do this it’s more likely that they will take it seriously. If there is a glaring concern you should also be prepared to share how this is going to be addressed.
Connected to Christ
I developed this survey based on research about why teens stay in church into their college years. Each of these items in this little survey gauge whether a student is likely to remained connected to Christ and the church. Low scores in certain areas will demonstrate where you need to put more time and effort.

Working with the Results
If you are brave enough to use one or both of these you will find important information to make the group better. This will help students feel that they have a say in what goes on. You may be surprised to see things that you have never noticed.
I would say rejoice over the strengths that show up in the survey and build on these. Don’t try to fix everything at once. Choose 2 or 3 items that can be effectively addressed. Successful improvements in just a few areas will build morale in your group and give students a greater sense of owner ship.
