Whatever it was that motivated Jesus’ disciples, I doubt it was a thirst for thrills. Peter actually told Jesus to get away from him at first. The others were called and then called others to follow him. None of them give any indication that they were adrenaline junkies looking for the “next big thing.” In fact, I think if you look at this more closely, these are the things we should be using to inspire young people instead of thrills.

It’s not enough that you love your kids.

Students will leave your group if they don’t feel loved and accepted by other students. That’s not always easy to pull off. Some students are better at making friends than others. Some students are just harder to love because of various behaviors. Unless they find a friend or a way  to fit in, they won’t last long in your group.

Okay, now might not be the best growing season where you live but I know that with the correct conditions any youth group can begin to experience better health and growth even now. Just the same way that living things need warmth, water, sunlight, and nutrients youth groups require some essential elements to thrive. Without these elements or if your group is deficient in one of these areas, your students are not going to grow as they should. So what are these six key conditions?
