3 Ways To Be A Great Youth LEADER and 1 TED Talk

If you’re in youth ministry then you’re in leadership.

It’s really that simple.  The question is, “are you a great leader for a bygone era?”

We need to think differently about leadership for the 21st century.  Students deserve solid leadership for the now and future. Here are 3 things we all need to know and a TED Talk every youth leader needs to see!

How to Develop Courageous Leadership

You need courage if you’re going to work with teens.

They can smell fear from 50 feet and they can determine who is in charge in the first minute that they enter your meeting place. Any hesitation on your part and you will be overrun. Sadly, this level of confidence and courage doesn’t automatically come with the title of “youth worker” –it must be developed. Here’s how…

The One Thing and Your Youth Ministry

I just read a very interesting book.

Even though it is not specifically about Youth Ministry I do think it would be a huge benefit to you.  In fact I think you should click here and buy it as soon as possible.  It is not a difficult or long read, but it is worth it.

It is called The One Thing.  When you open up the book, the first thing you will read is this Russian proverb;

“If you chase two rabbits you will not catch either one

This is really the message of the book.  The authors argue that if you want to have extraordinary results then you must focus. Here’s what you need to focus on…

What Youth Workers Can Learn From Deflategate

The NFL season is about to start.

For me that is a great thing.  For my wife, not so much.

If you follow sports even a little, you must have heard about “deflategate”.  The NFL has accused Tom Brady and the New England Patriots of cheating.  It is a long story.  You might agree with the NFL or you might not.  I don’t really care.

However, there is a very important youth ministry lesson found in deflategate. Here’s how I see it…

5 Ways to Build a Better Retreat and Retreat Planner

Nothing changes teens’ lives

like retreats and extended times away together. A group survey of 1000 teens and many other studies proved that pretty conclusively. But not all retreats are created equally. It’s possible to maximize the impact of a weekend with a few intentional enhancements. Here are 5 ideas that really work:

Shaping Your Ministry the Marvel Comics Way

Marvel Comics is a money making machine.

Their characters are in some of the highest grossing movies of all time.  You could buy anything from bed sheets to underwear with a Spider-Man or Hulk character on them!

Believe it or not the origin of Marvel Comics is not as glamorous as one might think. It provides us with some crucial lessons we should all learn.

4 Strategies for Managing Expectations

“What do these people want from me!?”

I complained to God.

Parents wanted me to fix their kids. The students wanted the “funnest youth ministry in the city.” My pastor wanted me at the church from early morning prayer at 6 Am to 4 pm in the afternoon (7 am on Saturdays) I had assignments to complete for the seminary, and I was losing touch with my family. I found myself saying too frequently, “I hate my life.”

I looked at a bunch of books on burnout and life management. Finally, I discovered this remarkable strategy for dealing with expectations. I hope that you, or someone you know, will find it helpful too!
